Footnotes:

  • Note 1: Varamund is generally believed to be a pseudonym for François Hotman (1524-90), a Huguenot lawyer and writer - see [Kocher-Hotman] p.350. Back to Text
  • Note 2: This is an English translation of a Latin text published the same year entitled De Furoribus Gallicis, horrenda & indigna Amirallii Castillionei, Nobilium atq; illus-trium caede ...: Vera & simplex Narratio. Ernesto Varamundo Frisio Auctore (London, 1573). Back to Text
  • Note 3: Whilst Books I-IX and XI-XII are written by Jean de Serres (1540-98), Paul Kocher established that Book X was a "word-for-word reprint" of [Varamund] - see [Kocher-Hotman]. A translation of one of Serres' earlier works on the French Wars of Religion by Geoffrey Fenton was to be found in the King's School Library when Marlowe was a pupul there. Back to Text
