- Summary: Teatru Manoel presents The Jew of Malta written by Christopher Marlowe and directed by Chris Gatt, with Mikhail Basmadjian as Barabas, Antony Edridge as Ferneze, Joe Zammit as Ithamore, and Naomi Said as Abigail. "The Jew of Malta is one of Christopher Marlowe's lesser known plays. This may be because of its strange amalgam of tragedy and fiercely black comedy. In many ways it was ahead of its time and today reads more like a Quentin Tarantino script where violence and bloody slapstick comedy clash in one vibrant, fast-moving play. It expects a lot from its actors who are sent rushing in and out of scenes with breakneck alacrity in a plot which has so many twists and knots you could construct a macrame basket out of it. It is a difficult play which refuses definition: at turns political, satirical, farcical and even tragic. It brings together characters of the three major monotheistic faiths, and roundly condemns all three. It is, in short, and typically of Marlowe, a revolutionary play which stings and hurts even as it entertains."

"Malta is threatened with invasion by the Turkish Empire. The Christian Governor attempts to buy off the invading fleet with monies levied from the island's Jewish population. When the prominent Jewish merchant, Barabas, protests the levy, the Governor seizes his entire fortune to pay the bribe. As men of all faiths ruthlessly pursue their own interests hidden behind a mask of religious hypocrisy, the enraged Barabas plans a swift and bloody vengeance that threatens to destroy the entire island. Justin Audibert makes his RSC debut to direct Christopher Marlowe's subversive play. Justin previously worked as an Assistant Director on the RSC Ensemble 2009-2011. - Summary: The Fourth Monkey Theatre Company present three Christopher Marlowe productions in his home city of Canterbury to celebrate the 450th anniversary of his birth. The Jew of Malta, directed by Justin Audibert and with Adam Trussell playing Barabas and Ami Syers as Ferneze, is as "ablaze with controversy today as it was four hundred years ago; defenders of this play argue that it is principally a biting satire on political counselling on all sides with Barabas, the unapologetic anti-hero, the only man honest enough to admit his own malignancy. Decide for yourselves in this courageous and unflinching rare revival."
